30 Day Shred – Second Round

Having enjoyed pretty amazing results from 30 Day Shred last year, it was pretty much a given that I will give it another try. Since I was diligent enough to document my experience with the program daily, it is interesting to be able to compare how my fitness level changed. As I have previously mentioned, I have quit all of my DVD workouts right after my last weightloss update, but have been figure skating almost daily since around October, which appears to have done wonders for my endurance.

Compared to last year, Level 1 of the 30 Day Shred was a walk in the park. While some of the exercises, such as push ups, have definitely taken a set back, overall, I hardly even broke a sweat. Judging from the “anterior raises” exercise from the third round, which I absolutely despised last year, even my arms appear to be stronger: I was able to do it with 5lbs dumbbells, missing just a few.

As to the results, I am not quite sure what to think. My scale is showing +0.4 lbs, and since I haven’t been taking pictures, it is hard to say whether this is a muscle gain or a result of my diet being less than perfect. I do think that I look better at my current weight than I used to look at the same weight last year, but maybe I am just not being honest with myself. In fact, I am wondering if this workout is simply no longer challenging enough to show noticeable results as it did last year. Still plan to stick around till the end, so time will show.

Acne Treatment Update #3

March 24

Looking at the picture above, you probably would not think that the last two weeks were the worst in my acne history. When I ditched Benzol Peroxide and turned to all natural skincare regimen, I did experience a pretty unsightly breakout (picture here), but nothing even close to what what I had to deal with since my last acne update. About two weeks ago, I woke up with the sides of my face covered in dozens of small bumps (similar to those I used to get on my forehead) and just as many blackheads, which I have never had on my cheeks before. A couple of days later, I also started to get rather sizable bumps on my chin and around the jaw line (2-3 at a time), which kept popping up one right after another. Fast forward a week and the things were looking so bad that I every time I looked in the mirror or touched my face, I did not know whether to cry or simply rip my skin off.

From the very begining of this pimple explosion, I was pretty sure that it had to do with all the oils I was using. Nothing else in my skin care regimen could have clogged my pores so terribly. It had to be either the Oil Cleansing method or jojoba oil, which I was applying as a moisturizer. As worrisome as this realization was, quitting OCM (or oils all together) before reaching a three-months mark was not an option. Having done quite a bit of research before starting OCM, I knew that it can result in a pretty severe purging period, which can last anywhere from a couple of weeks to several months, and I did not want a temporary inconvenience to prevent me from reaping many benefits of this potentially amazing method. This being said, I did decide that it was time to rethink my oil choices, and ended up replacing jojoba oil with hempseed oil, which is supposed to be completely noncomedogenic (0 comedogenity rating as opposed to 2 for jojoba).

OCM purging March 24

An interesting thing about these two weeks from pimple hell was that while the sides of my face were taking a turn for the worse, my forehead was beginning to clear up. About a month ago, for instance, the texture of my skin there could not have been more disgusting: The oiliness and dry scabs made it feel like a cheese grater that was dipped into oil. Every time I gently scratched my forehead with my nails, I would lift a pretty gross paste consisting of dead skin cells and sebum. To my immeasurable satisfaction, by the end of March, both excess production of sebum and dry scabs were almost completely gone; the tiny underskin pimples that plagued my forehead since my early teens were soon to follow. Below are two photos of the same patch on of skin on my forehead taken one month apart. While lighting makes it somewhat difficult to truly appreciate the difference, I think it is pretty noticeable that my skin looks much less bumpy.

February to March Forehead area

At the moment, my face is about 90% healed: There are still a few bumps remaining, but I think that they are mostly a result of my picking. All the blackheads left my cheeks as suddenly as they invaded them, and for the first time in two weeks, I do not feel completely grossed out when touching my face or looking in the mirror. Throughout the breakout, I continued to OCM every day with a blend of hempseed oil, castor oil, avocado oil, and tea tree oil. To make sure that no dirty oil is remaining on my face, after steaming and cleaning my face with a washcloth, I alternated between honey and clay masks. I plan to continue with the same routine in the near future and hold my fingers crossed that I’ve seen the end of purging (or whatever the hell it was)!

30 Day Shred: Days 22, 23, and 24

I have been too busy to update on my 30 Day Shred progress in the past few days, but I am still on track. Yesterday was the fourth day of the third level, and I remain a fan. I don’t know whether it has to do with the routine that Jillian has us perform on this level or just me developing a liking for strenuous workouts, but I don’t mind pushing myself through more difficult exercises. Don’t get me wrong I still slack quite a bit, but I no longer dread the beginning of a workout or have a burning desire to turn the DVD off somewhere in the middle. At the moment, there are about five exercises that I find rather difficult, so for the remaining six days of Level 3, my goal is to improve on those. Other than that, I think I am doing pretty well.

30 Day Shred: Day 20

The last 10 days were some of the most difficult that I have ever push myself both physically and emotionally. There were a day of working out at 7000 feet above the ocean, a day of shredding after 4 hours of skiing and 5 hours of driving home, two days when all I could think about was food, and a number of days when I felt like I’d pass out right in the middle of the workout. As AA teaches us, I took it one day at a time, and slowly but surely have managed to arrived to day 20 in one piece.

Now that Level 2 is finally over, I can tell that it never really gets easier. After a great workout on Monday and a decent one yesterday, this evening I struggled once again. Granted, these were not the same struggles as in the beginning, but it was nothing like the easy breathy last few days of the Level 1. As for the results, I can definitely see some improvement in my strength and endurance and am still unsure whether there are any positive changes in the shape of my body. I’ll be taking a progress shot in the next few days, so we’ll have to see about that.

Farewell Level 2 of the 30 Day Shred. I will not be missing you at all!

30 Day Shred: Day 19

Yesterday was next to last day of the 30 Day Shred, the sole fact of which made the workout 10 times more enjoyable. It was a bit harder than Day 18, but I have a suspicion that it had to do with by my dragging it out until 11:30pm. Inspired by my awesome performance on Monday and feeling much stronger in general, I tried to do a full push-up and ended up on my face. Honestly, I have no idea how you, people, do them! Aside from the exercises that require arm strength, however, things seemed pretty easy, and I was not sweating even half as much as I did in the beginning. This being said, I still can’t wait to be finally done with this level. Fingers crossed, the rumors I’ve heard about level 3 are true, and it will be a bit less of a torture.
